Mercury begins another retrograde phase on August 4/5, lasting until August 28/29, primarily occurring in Leo and partially in Virgo. In the weeks, especially the days, leading up to the retrograde, we may already start to sense its influence as Mercury slows down and traverses the area of the sky it will revisit during the retrograde. This phase, known as the ‘pre-shadow’ period, began on July 16/17.
Mercury retrograde periods are notorious for disruptions or problems affecting communication, technology, transactions, motor vehicles, and commuting. Some may even experience headaches at the onset. We might face challenges, misunderstandings, and errors in our communications, numbers, details, and commerce, along with changes, cancellations, or delays in our schedules.
These types of issues might be more persistent when we are operating in an overly analytical way while neglecting our inner guidance and the flow of events. However, depending on how we navigate this period and other influencing factors, we might not always experience these inconveniences, or they could just be minor irritants and less prominent.
On the positive side, Mercury retrograde offers an excellent opportunity to revisit or redo tasks, projects, ideas, or anything initiated in the past. This period can provide a fresh perspective or shift in thinking, allowing us to approach things in novel ways. It’s also a time for reconnecting with old friends, family, lovers, or others we haven’t seen in a while. These reconnections during a retrograde can facilitate shifts or changes in dynamics. In some cases, it can bring up past or unresolved issues to the surface for resolution or a change in perception.
The Deeper Purpose Of Mercury Retrograde
Ultimately, Mercury Retrograde serves as a period for recalibration and adjustment in various aspects of our lives and our mental approach towards these issues. It’s a time when we may receive crucial insights and start to see things from a different perspective. For many, this can bring about mild transformations, but for others, it may facilitate more significant changes depending on how it interacts with one’s personal astrological chart.
During and after the retrograde, we may experience shifts or changes in specific areas of our lives, leading to a re-orientation that influences our path in the coming months or, in some cases or ways, has a lasting impact. The three weeks following the retrograde, known as the ‘post-shadow’ period, allow us to move forward with newfound awareness and adjustments. New ideas and thoughts that emerged during the retrograde will start to take shape and become more defined as time progresses.
Events or themes that arose in the weeks leading up to the retrograde can indicate where or how this energy might manifest. There may have been changes or developments during that time which can undergo sorting, shifts, adjustments, insights, or different perspectives, during the retrograde and the two weeks following it. Unknown variables, whether positive or negative, that were previously unseen or unconsidered may become apparent as well.
The signs and elements Mercury retrograde travels through highlight the energies we are re-orienting with. More importantly, if you are familiar with your natal chart, the houses or planetary placements in contact with it, will show which specific areas of life you will experience this energy in. For those well-versed enough in astrology, Mercury retrograde begins at 4°06′ Virgo and retrogrades back to 21°25′ Leo before moving forward again.
Occurring in Leo & Virgo, Conjunct Regulus, The Second in a Fire Series
Mercury Retrograde always occurs primarily in one element in a series that lasts for 1-2 years. This retrograde is the second of a series of five that predominantly takes place in Fire signs, continuing until Summer 2025. However, it will also partially occur in the Earth sign of Virgo, serving as a callback to the previous Mercury Retrograde series in Earth signs that occurred from early 2023 until early 2024.
The Fire element is all about inspiration and passion. It is intuitive, instinctive, and energetic. As a ‘fixed’ fire sign ruled by the Sun, Leo embodies radiating love, creativity, heart-centered self-expression, and influence. Leo is the performer, the leader, and the creator, seeking joy in expressing itself in these ways. It also governs children, fun, romance, courage, and generosity. On the flip side, Leo energy can manifest negatively as egotistical, dramatic, and attention-seeking.
The Earth element emphasizes practicality, groundedness, and realism. It is foundational, dependable, physical, resourceful, and productive. As a ‘mutable’ Earth sign ruled by Mercury, Virgo is about versatility and adaptability, tackling life’s challenges and making our daily lives run more smoothly and efficiently. Virgo energy embodies skills, tools, health, cleanliness, purity, attention to detail, and organization, although it can also be overly critical and meticulous.
This retrograde will also traverse the fixed star Regulus, which represents power, influence, fame, and leadership. Regulus, the heart of the Lion in the Leo constellation (yet currently in the tropical sign of Virgo), is regal and authoritative. As Mercury retrogrades over Regulus, it may bring to light issues related to authority, honor, and personal integrity. This alignment offers an opportunity to reassess how we wield our personal power and influence, encouraging us to lead with heart-centered authenticity and integrity.

August 4/5 Mercury Retrograde begins at 4:56am Universal Time on August 5th at 4°06′ Virgo
This is the period in which Mercury changes from direct to retrograde motion while in a stationary phase. Common Mercury retrograde themes, such as delays and complications, may become particularly prominent at this time and in the days leading up to it. Your experiences or thoughts during this period may provide some indication of how this retrograde will affect you in the coming weeks. Keep in mind that the pre-retrograde shadow began on July 16/17, so certain issues, developments, or themes that have arisen since then may also play a role in how this energy affects you.
August 7/8 Mercury Retrograde conjunct Venus, Sun sextile Jupiter
Mercury retrograde forms a conjunction with Venus while both are in Virgo. This alignment highlights social connections, friendships, love, finances, pleasures, aesthetics, and art-related matters. This can be a time of shifts, developments, changed perspectives, revisitations, adjustments, reevaluations, or reconnections in these areas.
The Sun in Leo’s sextile to Jupiter in Gemini infuses the day with optimism and opportunities for growth and expansion. This aspect provides a positive and supportive backdrop, fostering inspiration and broader perspectives. It’s an ideal time for activities related to education, marketing, or media.
August 13th-16th Mercury Retrograde conjunct Regulus while in a Yod pattern with Pluto and Neptune, Mars conjunct Jupiter and square Saturn
During this period, Mercury retrograde aligns with the star Regulus while also forming a Yod pattern with Pluto and Neptune. The conjunction with Regulus, a star associated with leadership, recognition, influence, honor, integrity, nobility, fame, and success, can be a time of revisitation, reflection, and reassessment of roles and areas connected to this star. Negatively, Regulus is also associated with downfalls due to excessive pride, lack of integrity, or abuse of power.
The Yod pattern involving Pluto, Neptune, and Mercury retrograde at the apex brings a blend of transformative and spiritual energies. Pluto’s influence may bring deep introspection, confronting hidden truths, shadow qualities, obsessions, or inner changes. Neptune’s influence adds spirituality, imagination, dreams, compassion, illusions, or escapism. This Yod supports tapping into our inner wisdom, looking at things in a more meaningful way, and/or embracing the transformative power of spiritual growth.
Mars conjunct Jupiter can reflect enthusiastic actions, attempts to do things in a big way, or a drive for expansion. However, this can also result in excessiveness, taking on too much, and getting overwhelmed with details, especially with it being in Gemini. The square to Saturn introduces challenges, delays, or obstacles that could be obstructive if necessary. The tension between Mars’ assertiveness and Saturn’s restrictive nature may push us to be more cautious, disciplined, structured, or realistic.
August 17th-20th Mercury Inferior Conjunction with Sun while both square Uranus, occurring during a T-square with Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Leading into Full Moon In Aquarius
On August 18/19, we reach the halfway point of this retrograde, marked by Mercury joining the Sun in what is known as its ‘inferior conjunction’. This is the culmination of the retrograde and a significant period in Mercury’s cycle with the Sun. Developments and realizations during this time are part of a process of releasing certain thoughts, ideas, perceptions, old interests, and expectations that no longer serve us, while also potentially planting the seeds for new ones. For some people, retrograde-related complications and frustrations can be more prominent during this conjunction, depending on individual circumstances and how one is applying oneself.
During this inferior conjunction, both Mercury and the Sun will be in a challenging square with Uranus, beginning on the 17th. This aspect can bring disruptions, unpredictability, and sudden changes. The square to Uranus can disrupt our usual routines and thought patterns, pushing us to adapt to new circumstances. This energy can amplify the inferior conjunction process of letting go of outdated thoughts, perceptions, ideas, or ways of thinking.
Additionally, this period will feature a T-square with Venus opposite Saturn, both in a square with Jupiter. This configuration creates tension between pleasure, expansion, and the need for discipline and responsibility. Relationships, finances, and values may come under scrutiny or face obstacles. The opposition between Venus and Saturn can bring restrictions or challenges, while the square to Jupiter can highlight solutions that involve perspective and growth.
All of this leads to a Full Moon in Aquarius on August 19/20, which will oppose the Sun and Mercury and also square Uranus. The Full Moon reflects tension between personal self-expression and collective matters, or between the heart and the mind. The square to Uranus adds unpredictability and instability but also points to solutions that involve unconventional approaches or breaking free from limiting situations.
August 23/24/25 Mercury Retrograde sextile Mars
This sextile aspect between Mercury retrograde in Leo and Mars in Gemini brings a harmonious and supportive connection between our thoughts and actions. It encourages us to tackle challenges head-on and be productive. Considering that Mercury is in the last stretch of its retrograde and Mars is in a Gemini-ruled sign, this can also be a time for insights or realizations about how we need to apply ourselves in the coming weeks.
August 28/29 Mercury goes stationary direct at 21°25′ Leo, Venus opposes Neptune as it transitions into Libra and a trine with Pluto
Mercury ends its retrograde as it goes stationary direct on August 28/29. It will slowly begin to move forward and gradually pick up speed in the following days and weeks. As this happens, the areas of our lives that have been affected by this retrograde will start to become clearer, things will fall into place more easily, and we may experience resolutions depending on how it affected us. We will feel better positioned to move forward in the impacted areas of life.
During this Mercury stationary period, Venus opposes Neptune, bringing themes of idealism, dreams, and potential disillusionment in relationships, values, pleasures, and financial matters. This aspect can blur the lines between reality and fantasy, calling for careful discernment regarding matters of the heart and wallet.
Overlapping with the later part of this aspect, Venus leaves Virgo (where it struggles) and moves into Libra, one of its home signs. This transition signifies a shift towards harmony and balance in relationship matters. The trine to Pluto brings an empowering energy, offering opportunities to deepen connections and engage in meaningful interactions. This aspect can reflect renewal, positive change, or beneficial developments in relationships, finances, artistic matters, or aesthetics.
